Boundaries

This map should serve travelers to Tibet and the Himalaya region as an orientation tool. That is why the map was designed from a practical standpoint. At press time (May 2005), the actual administrative and national borders are indicated as best as can be determined. The map contains no commitment with regard to international law. Neither political nor legal inferences can be determined by the map.
Historical Tibet
The historical provinces of Tibet are Ngari, Tsang, Ü, Kham and Amdo.
The administration of Tibet was reorganized after the Chinese invasion in 1950. The Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) covers less than half of historical Tibet. The other Tibetan-speaking areas are part of the provinces of Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan.
